USB-C Cables Look the Same. They Are Not.
Learn why identical-looking USB-C cables can support very different charging speeds, data rates and video capabilities.
The connector shape is only the visible part of a USB-C cable. Two cables can plug into the same device while supporting very different power, data and display capabilities.
Separate charging from data
A cable advertised for high charging power may not offer the fastest data transfer. Likewise, a high-speed data cable may include capabilities you do not need for a bedside charger. Decide what job the cable must do.
Power ratings matter
Modern USB Power Delivery can support substantial power, but the charger, cable and device work as a system. For higher-power applications, check that the cable is explicitly rated for the required wattage.
Video is another capability
Some USB-C connections carry display signals; not every cable is intended for that purpose. If you are connecting a monitor or dock, verify video and data specifications rather than shopping by connector alone.
Buy enough capability, not mystery
Clear specifications from a reputable manufacturer are more useful than a long list of vague compatibility claims.
